So many of our clients ask us why we do what we do. The truth is, all of us here at Annapolis Area Doulas have our own “why”–the reason we became doulas–with one common thread.
Some of us love pregnant women. Although pregnancy can be rough at times, and downright miserable for some, we think it’s really beautiful to see a woman who is growing life inside of her. Each new development is something to marvel over. To see how your face lights up when you talk about the arrival of your little one is something we are privileged to witness.
Some of us love labor. Yep, you read that right. The progression of your body opening up to deliver a perfect little human into the world is amazing. The fact that you invite us into that intimate, private space is an honor.
Some of us love babies. Every baby we have seen born into the world is a miracle. And although we love their sweet smell and their soft little noises, what we love most is that each baby represents profound possibility. Your baby can be anything and anyone in this lifetime. Will she be a force to be reckoned with, a warrior of peace and healing? Will he be a passionate pursuer of a compassionate, joyful life? We know you have hopes and dreams for your baby, and we are so delighted when you share them with us.
The one common thread that ties our doulas together is our passion for supporting women. We believe that no matter a woman’s background, education, beliefs, sexual orientation, religion, or choices, she deserves to have someone by her side, believing in her and showing her that divine love that only women can give to one another. We love holding your hand, wiping your brow, and squeezing your hips. We love helping you understand and navigate the choices you get to make for yourself and your baby. Most of all, we love watching you as you find your inner strength. When you discover your voice and you use it to empower yourself, we see a life changing thing happening, and we know you will never be the same. When it comes to postpartum support, we take pleasure in ensuring you can take time to heal after giving birth, helping you find the foods that will nourish your body, keeping up with household chores, and caring for your baby while you get the rest you need.
Most of us became doulas after we had babies of our own. Either we used a doula and were inspired by her devoted care, or we didn’t use a doula, and were struck by the need for women to feel safe and supported during this momentous time in their lives. Either way, our paths led us here, to you. There is no other place we would rather be.
